Bab Al-7ara 3: those were the good ol’ days

08Sep08

Oh the good old days when women were “hareem” and men had those funny mustaches!

The admiration for such “values” baffles me! what values are we praising? male chauvinism?, female inferiority?, natural immorality of women?, the culture of the weaker sex with the attractive submission and voiceless existence?

I have tried to watch this show, but all I could see is a bunch of annoyingly chatty women who’s either eat, drink, talk about other women or serve their husbands while men arrogantly and aggressively do the rest of yet not very productive stuff such as asking for some girl’s hand and constantly fighting with each other.

You want to call this entertainment, go ahead, but don’t talk about lost values and yearning to the past. Most of those who “yearn” are holders of such “values” who feel that things are changing even if deadly slowly. I’m really surprised of the wide popularity of bab Al-7ara, you’d think that some would find yelling at the wife for asking a question or hitting the daughter for talking to some guy repulsive, but most of Jordanians, regardless of where they live find that OK even if subconsciously. Do we really want those days back? (not that they’re over by the way). Should women have no say in social, religious, political and industrial matters? should she have no say in her husband’s business too? do we want the caveman back? why do some like men who are aggressive, stubborn like a stone and who treat them like shit?

Wish I had more time to talk more about this!

    Preach it, sister!

I could not have said it any better.

The people behind the show are clearly glorifying the ancient misogyny that is still very much alive in many parts of the Muslim world.

This mentality is responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent girls in “honor killings”. It is about time that these people woke up and realized that this is not about our “unique culture and conservative customs” and that it’s about people who actually die as a result of these attitudes.

I always laugh at the notion that Arabic societies are more moral than western societies. The west allows relationships between consenting adults while protecting women from rape and discrimination. Arabic societies on the other hand, have legislated all kinds of laws that discriminate against and restrict women and view victims of rape as loose women who probably had it coming. In Saudi Arabia a rape victim has actually been prosecuted and sentenced to 6 months in prison!

Which society has the upper hand when it comes to morality?

I find bab al 7ara as a nice comedy! It does make fun of those values rather than cheering for it.

Who is the jerk who wrote that news? yearning for original values?! lol. I guess he is yearning for more stupidity and backwardness!

like it or not, the idea that bab il 7ara represented “traditional” or “oringinal” values is one of the show’s main appeals. it is loved by women just as much as men. and yes, those days are not over. we’ve just changed the dress code a bit but much of those values are still alive amidst the a decent portion of the arab population.

many of the housewives in jordan and syria are still a bunch of annoyingly chatty women who either eat, drink, talk about other women or serve their husbands and many men in this region are arrogant, aggressive who are constantly fighting with each other.

so when we say we yearn for those “original values” it’s really less about feeling nostalgic and more about the fear that those values are slipping away in the contemporary urban battleground.

in the US, a popular show with a similar cult following has become Mad Men; a show about New York advertisers living in the early 60’s. it is fairly reflective of the same bab il 7ara attitudes, where all the men use women like play toys, look down on them, have affairs, smoke nonstop, etc.

    it’s actually not a bad show :-P

“so when we say we yearn for those “original values” it’s really less about feeling nostalgic and more about the fear that those values are slipping away in the contemporary urban battleground.”

Bingo!! this is exactly what’s going on!

I used to like Mad Men btw, when I had time for TV that is.

Nas, actually it is more of a comical exaggeration of a disappearing values that are laughable rather than a yearning for those values.

People watch the show because it is entertaining, not because they are longing for those days. I don’t thin there are still women these days who would dream for their husband to slap them to prove himself being a man.

I disagree with “The Observer”, I do not think its an exaggerated comedy! I believe many men look at it as how things should be.

I don’t like the way women are treated there, a man should stay a man in a relationship but not in that way it is not how manhood should be!

Women in bab il 7ara, live to serve their husband, see nothing from life and then die!
