This is the first strike since Hamas gained power three months ago; the majority of shops, universities and even hospitals were closed on Sunday. Hamas shrugged it off and considered it an attempt by the Palestinian leadership to weaken Hamas.
Meanwhile, photos of Palestinian children who have been living off Israeli trash were captured by the New York Times earlier this week.

“Hamas shrugged it off and considered it an attempt by the Palestinian leadership to weaken Hamas.”
Don’t you think that’s at least partially true?
Asma, I could care less whether the leadership attempted to weaken Hamas by encouraging Gazans to go on a strike, this is beside the point here, which is that Gazans have minds of their own and they responded to the violence of the same group that they elected in the past peacefully yet effectively. Whether or not did the leadership benefit from that, or actually planned for it (which I think is quite ridiculous and most probably not the case) is irrelevant in my opinion. Gazans do not need anyone to think and decide for them believe me.
